Lectorale Rede
Het eerste journalistieke Shark Tank Media Fest is op donderdag 3 oktober in Tilburg. Tijdens dit event werken ruim 50 studenten een dag lang aan innovatieve concepten rondom mentale gezondheid, die aan het einde van de dag worden beoordeeld door innovatieve juryleden (de sharks). Deze dag is een samenwerking met KRO-NCRV, die in hun journalistieke dossier ‘Druk!’ het mentale welzijn onder jongeren op de voet volgt. Daarnaast verzorgt programmamaker Tim Hofman een keynote over zijn nieuwe boek Goede Moed en geeft lector Danielle Arets de lezing ‘Goede Zin’. De presentatie deze dag is in handen van KRO- NCRV presentatrice Sosha Duysker.
Waarom mijden jongeren het nieuws? Hoe bedenk je een concept om beter om te gaan met socialmediaverslaving? En hoe maak je aantrekkelijke content die over ‘zwaardere’ onderwerpen als depressie en prestatiedruk gaat? Studenten van Fontys Journalistiek, Fontys ICT en ROC Tilburg werken op 3 oktober een dag lang aan nieuwe mediaconcepten ter bevordering van de mentale gezondheid. Ze worden daarin begeleid door innovatiefacilitators, ervaringsdeskundigen en coaches van NPO Innovatie, KRO-NCRV en Fontys Journalistiek.
Geïnspireerd op het populaire tv-programma Shark Tank, presenteren de groepen aan het einde van de dag hun idee voor potentiële investeerders (de sharks), waaronder Karlijn Goossen (genre coördinator journalistiek bij NPO), Alain Dujardin (creatief directeur Greenberry), Egon Verharen (manager innovatie NPO), René Sommer (hoofdredacteur KRO-NCRV), Julia Veldman (eindredacteur VPRO Tegenlicht) en Sandra Hilster (mediadirecteur KRO-NCRV). Ze selecteren drie ideeën die verder uitgewerkt worden.
Het publiek is vanaf 14.00 uur welkom voor de keynote van Tim Hofman, gevolgd door een keur aan werksessies georganiseerd door onze onderzoekers. Maak kennis met het Journalistiek Dilemmaspel, test beeldmetaforen en foto’s in het klimaatlab waarin onderzoekers effectieve klimaatjournalistiek ontwikkelen, leer hoe je AI kunt inzetten voor onderzoeksjournalistieke producties of bezoek de expositie waarin het lectoraat al het onderzoek fysiek heeft uitgewerkt.
We eindigen de dag natuurljk met de lectorale rede van Danielle Arets en de rest van de team en sluiten af met een borrel en muziek!

09.30 Tech Yoga – oefeningen met je smartphone door SETUP
Het laatste waar je elke nacht naar kijkt, en de eerste aanraking in de ochtend. We hebben het natuurlijk over je smartphone. Weinig andere apparaten zijn zo onlosmakelijk met ons verbonden. 09.40 Do’s en dont’s van conceptontwikkeling door Jekke Mink en Jing Foo Yu
Jekke en Jing zijn facilitators voor innovatie en creatie. Zij hebben uitgebreide kennis en ervaring in journalistiek en media. Hoe kun je op nieuwe manieren je verhalen vertellen of een ander publiek bereiken en betrekken. ‘Dat kan met nieuwe formats op bestaande kanalen, maar ook door de vele kansen te verkennen die nieuwe platforms en technologie ons bieden’. Jekke en Jing begeleiden bij deze Shark Tank het proces van design thinking.

Alle studenten gaan samen met de omroepen aan de slag. Ze ontwikkelen in kleine multidisciplinaire teams, begeleid door coaches van KRO-NCRV Druk en Fontys Journalistiek innovatieve concepten rondom het thema mentale gezondheid. Met welke innovatieve ideeën vanuit de jongeren zelf kunnen we op een positieve manier gezamenlijk met de omroepen deze druk voorkomen? Gen Z aan zet over het verbeteren van hun mentale welzijn.

14.00 Start publieksprogramma, opening door Sosha Duysker
De presentatrice, actrice, verslaggeefster en programmamaker Sosha Duysker is onder andere een van de vaste gezichten van het televisieprogramma ‘Keuringsdienst van Waarde’. Sinds oktober 2022 presenteert ze ook de dierenquiz ‘Waku Waku’. Duysker staat bekend om haar goede energie en humeur, en zal deze dag als host het programma in goede banen leiden.
14.05 Keynote Tim Hofman: Goede Moed
Tim Hofman vertelt over zijn boek ‘Goede Moed’ een pleidooi voor een minder bang bestaan. In deze bestseller bespreekt de programmamaker en gevierd journalist de angsten die onze samenleving stevig in de weg zitten, maar zoomt hij ook in op onze persoonlijke angsten en overwegingen. Waarom zijn we zo verslaafd aan persoonlijke groei? Is stilstand echt zo eng? Is deugen misschien niet zo spannend als men doet lijken? En hoe ga je om met faalangst?

Maak kennis met de onderzoeksprojecten van het Lectoraat Ontwerpen aan de Journalistiek en werkveldpartners. Docent-onderzoekers en studenten betrokken bij het lectoraat gaan met het publiek in gesprek over lopende onderzoeksprojecten. Wat vinden jongeren van klimaatjournalistiek? Hoe denken ze over inclusie? Is er potentie voor avatars in de journalistiek? En hoe maak je de fysieke nieuwsruimte aantrekkelijk voor Gen Z?
Klimaat een tikkende tijdbom? Beelden en metaforen in klimaatjournalistiek

‘Tikkende tijdbom’, ‘armageddon’, ‘naderend tipping point’ – als het over klimaatverandering gaat, gebruiken journalisten regelmatig metaforen om dit complexe probleem voorstelbaar te maken. Soms gaan die vergezeld van alarmerende foto’s van een vuurzee of ijsbeer op een smeltende ijsschots. Heldere boodschap, niets meer aan doen, zou je denken. Maar hoe effectief zijn deze beeld (metaforen)? Welk effect hebben ze op jongvolwassenen?
In de journalistieke ‘Donkere Kamer’ (DOKA) van Fontys Journalistiek en het Nationaal Klimaat Platform onderzoeken we de invloed van taal en beelden uit de klimaatjournalistiek op Nederlandse jongeren. De DOKA stond deze zomer op festival Zwarte Cross (mogelijk gemaakt door SIA Innofest) en Lowlands (met NWO-subsidie). Tijdens deze sessie mag je zelf de Donkere Kamer in en je oordeel geven.
AI in de journalistiek: charmante assistent of terminator?

De website Journalistiek en AI is het resultaat van observaties op AI-toepassingen in het werkveld en diverse onderzoeken onder leiding van het Lectoraat Kwaliteitsjournalistiek in Digitale Transitie van de Hogeschool Utrecht, het Lectoraat Ontwerpen aan de Journalistiek van Fontys en Universiteit Wageningen, de Universiteit van Wenen, NOS, RTL Nieuws, Stichting Beeld & Geluid en de Ombudsman van de NPO.
Op de site vinden docenten, studenten en journalistieke professionals voorbeelden uit het journalistieke werkveld, (les)materiaal of handleidingen om AI in te zetten in verschillende fasen van het journalistieke proces. In deze werksessie nemen Yael de Haan, Jessy de Cooker en Nele Goutier je mee door het AI-landschap.
Live journalistiek: samen nieuws maken

Als journalisten nieuwsverhalen delen met een live publiek dan doet dat iets met de emotionele beleving van het nieuws. Live journalistiek geeft ruimte voor gesprek en gezamenlijke beleving van nieuwsgebeurtenissen. Daarmee lijkt het een kostbare aanvulling op nieuwswerk. Journalistiek theater De Balie in Amsterdam, RUW Den Bosch en studenten en alumni van de opleidingen Fontys Journalistiek en Performing Public Space van Fontys Kunsten werkten de afgelopen jaren op verschillende manieren samen in de ruimte tussen journalistiek en live performance. Samen met experts verkennen we, aan de hand van het dagthema mentale gezondheid in (journalistiek) werk, wat het betekent om samen nieuws te maken. Let op: deze sessie is een beetje interactief.
Journalistieke representatie van kwetsbare groepen

Zoek via Google Image Search op ‘daklozen’ en de kans is groot dat je iemand in verwaarloosde kleding slapend op een vies bankje in een park aantreft. Dat beeld is niet representatief voor het groeiend aantal jongeren in Nederland dat te maken heeft met dak- en thuisloosheid. Afgelopen drie jaar onderzocht het lectoraat in samenwerking met ervaringsdeskundigen, journalisten, persfotografen en partners naar manieren om deze groep beter te representeren. Tevens deed het lectoraat onderzoek naar de representatie van gezinnen die kampen met bestaansonzekerheid. In deze sessie delen de onderzoekers de inzichten en de hieruit ontwikkelde beelden waarin mensen zich wél in herkennen.

Veel redacties willen ‘iets met diversiteit’, maar niet iedereen weet hoe. Onderzoekers Fleur Hendrickx, Floortje Steigenga en Elizabeth Venicz van het lectoraat ontwikkelden daarom het Journalistiek Dilemmaspel; een spel dat redactieleden aanmoedigt om met elkaar in gesprek te gaan over journalistieke keuzes omtrent diversiteit en inclusie. Hoe spreek je over iemands afkomst of geloofsovertuiging, wanneer refereer je aan iemands (mentale) gezondheid of financiële situatie? Ontdek en leer al spelend waar dilemma’s zitten.
AI in de journalistiek een goed idee? Speel de Moral Design Game

AI gebruiken om nieuws verder te personaliseren, of juist meer content te kunnen produceren met een kleine redactie, is dat wel een goed idee? Kruip in de huid van bijvoorbeeld een eindredacteur, een AI-startup of een trouwe lezer en bediscussieer de wenselijkheid van AI op de journalistieke werkvloer. Speel met ons mee! Het Lectoraat Ontwerpen aan de Journalistiek en Moral Design Strategies van Fontys ontwikkelde het Moral Design om op een laagdrempelige manier een gesprek te voeren over de impact van opkomende technologie op werkprocessen. Afgelopen jaar maakten we in samenwerking met de Regionale Publieke Omroep een speciale journalistieke variant van het spel, met daarin veel aandacht voor de impact van AI.
Avatars als journalistieke vriendjes?

Avatars hebben inmiddels hun intrede gedaan in de nieuwsindustrie. Omroep Brabant lanceerde afgelopen jaar haar eerste digital news anchor en naar verwachting gaan meer omroepen volgen. In deze sessie gaan we samen onderzoeken wat virtual humans kunnen bijdragen in de journalistiek. Zijn avatars als MAI (zie afbeelding) de aangewezen (virtuele) persoon om het nieuws interessanter te maken? In deze sessie verkennen de onderzoekers Anne Lisa Giesen van het Lectoraat Ontwerpen aan de Journalistiek en Nick van Apeldoorn van Breda University of Applied Sciences de toekomst van avatars in de journalistiek. Plattelandsjongeren

Het bereiken van jongere doelgroepen is voor veel publieke en commerciële media een belangrijke uitdaging. De dertien regionale publieke omroepen ontwerpen en initiëren vanuit het gezamenlijke transformatieteam verschillende initiatieven om hier een antwoord op te bieden. Eén van die pilots is Kalm An waarin een regio-overstijgende (jonge) redactie is ingericht die (user generated) content maakt die aansluit bij de belevingswereld van plattelandsjongeren tussen Groningen tot aan de Achterhoek. Kalm An is te vinden op TikTok, Instagram en YouTube. In deze pilot wordt een werkwijze ontwikkeld voor het binden, bereiken en binden van ook andere jongere en nog onder bereikte doelgroepen met regionale journalistiek. In deze workshop word je geïnspireerd vanuit de lessen die de redactie het afgelopen jaar heeft geleerd met betrekking tot het bereiken van jongere doelgroepen vanuit journalistieke verbinding, doelgroepparticipatie en culturele identiteit.
De sexy nieuwsruimte, hoe maken we de nieuwsruimte aantrekkelijk voor Gen Z?

De tijd van compositieruimtes, printmachines en typografen is voorbij zo schrijft Usher in een onderzoek naar post-industriële nieuwsruimtes (Usher, 2014). Dat laat onverlet dat de fysieke nieuwsruimte een belangrijke ruimte is; het is de plek waar journalisten kennis uitwisselen, verhalen maken en voor het publiek zijn journalistieke gebouwen belangrijke ankerpunten. In het internationale visuele onderzoeksproject Requiem for a Newsroom onderzoekt Stuart Acker Holt, de relatie tussen nieuwsruimtes en werkcultuur. Wat vertelt de nieuwsruimte voor verhaal? Hoe zien fijne journalistieke werkplekken eruit? En hoe zorgen we dat die plekken vooral weer aantrekkelijk zijn voor jong talent?
Gokje wagen? Vermaak of verslaving

Heel veel programma’s zijn tegenwoordig gemaakt om mensen zo lang mogelijk geboeid te houden? Een ultieme serie zet aan tot bingewatching. Helaas zijn er maar weinig jongeren verslaafd aan journalistiek. Wat kunnen we leren van onderzoek naar verslaving voor het maken van nieuwsprogramma’s die beklijven en nog wel belangrijker hoe maken we goede journalistieke content over het groeiende maatschappelijke probleem van verslaving. Sinds 2021 is online gokken en wedden in Nederland legaal geworden. En dat is niet onopgemerkt gebleven. Met name jongeren en jongvolwassenen zijn veel gaan gokken en sportwedden. Maar we weten ook dat ongeveer 1 op 20 mensen die online gokken of wedden, een verslaving ontwikkelt. Omdat het niet gaat om fysieke middelen zoals drank en drugs, komen verslavingen vaak pas naar buiten als het echt veel te laat is. In deze workshop krijg je inzicht in deze industrie en de cognitieve mechanismen hoe mensen aangezet worden tot gokgedrag. Aan het einde weet je duidelijk: vermaak of verslavingsmachine. Waar zet jij als journalist op in?
EXTRA: Expositie Ontwerpen aan de Journalistiek

Geen zin in een workshop of liever in alle rust nieuwe kennis en informatie tot je nemen? Bezoek de expositie in Mindlabs. Curator en lectoraatsonderzoeker Matthijs Bosman ontwikkelde afgelopen jaar een expositie in de vorm van een interactief magazine, ook wel een opslagplaats. Een van de eerste tijdschriften dateert uit het begin van de 18de eeuw. De ‘uitvinding’ ervan moet toegeschreven worden aan Edward Cave, zoon van een schoenmaker uit het Engelse Warwickshire. Cave droomt van een nieuw concept in de wereld van de geschreven pers: een periodieke publicatie met essays, poëzie, politieke overpeinzingen en commercie. Het resulteert in het succesvolle ‘The Gentleman’s Magazine’. Het woord ‘magazine’ ontleent Cave aan het Arabische woord ‘makhazin’, dat ‘opslagplaats’ betekent. Het tijdschrift moet volgens Cave gezien worden als een ‘opslagplaats van gevarieerd goed’. Voortbouwend op het gedachtegoed van Cave, presenteert het lectoraat met deze expositie een interactief magazine van inzichten uit onderzoek, perspectieven en gedachtenspinsels over journalistieke transitie. Elke doos in het magazijn is een tijdelijke opslagplaats van gegenereerde kennis. Tijdelijk, want het onderzoek is- net als de journalistiek zelf- voortdurend in ontwikkeling. De kisten, of ‘showcases’ in dit fysieke magazijn maken tevens deel uit van het online magazine Ontwerpen aan de Journalistiek, waarin onderzoekers nieuwe ideeën en inzichten delen.

Lector Danielle Arets geeft toelichting op het werk van het lectoraat met een pleidooi voor ‘Goede Zin’. Hoe krijgen we weer goede zin in de journalistiek en misschien nog wel het belangrijkst…..hoe werken we met goede zin aan journalistieke innovatie?

Mark Deuze, (bassist en vocalist, tevens hoogleraar mediastudies verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam), Leon Heuts, (gitarist en zanger, tevens directeur Studium Generale Universiteit Delft) en Nein Nine (drummer en eigenaar van Layhgo) vormen samen de band Skinflower. De muzikale stijl is moeilijk te definiëren: metal en punk (Melvis, Tool, Neurosis) worden afgewisseld met pop noir (denk aan Nick Cave, Tindersticks) of new wave (The Cure, Joy Division).
